WHAT I DO

I teach pilates courses to movement educators and physical therapists around the world but right now primarily in Charlotte, North Carolina through my business ABsolute Pilates (www.absolute-pilates.com). In addition to this I am an Active Release Techniques® (ART®) Provider.
I like to break down bad movement strategies by manual muscle/fascia manipulation and then teach correct LOW LOAD movement with as little effort and as much efficiency as possible using EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICES (EBP) for MOVEMENT.
ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES® (ART®)
ART® is a patented, state of the art, soft tissue system/movement- based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fascitis, knee problems and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles. Once the tissue is released we will use pilates and other functional training techniques to build a better movement pattern.
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE (EBP) for MOVEMENT
I am not a physical therapist, but I believe in functional movement based on the best research with clinical expertise and the clients’ unique values and circumstances. What does this mean? To explain, the following has been taken from the text “Evidence-Based Medicine – How to Practice and Teach EBM” by Straus, Richardson, Glasziou and Haynes.
- By best research evidence we mean valid and clinically relevant research, often from the basic sciences of medicine, but especially from patient-centered clinical research into the accuracy of diagnostic tests (including the clinical examination), the power of prognostic markers, and the efficacy and safety of therapeutic, rehabilitative, and preventive regimens. New evidence from clinical research both invalidates previously accepted diagnostic tests and treatments and replaces them with new ones that are more accurate, more efficacious, and safer.
- By clinical expertise we mean the ability to use our clinical skills and past experience to rapidly identify each patient’s unique health state and diagnosis, their individual risks and benefits of potential interventions, and their personal circumstances and expectations.
- By client values we mean the unique preferences, concerns and expectations each patient brings to a clinical encounter and which must be integrated into clinical decisions if they are to serve the patient.
- By client circumstances we mean their individual and clinical state and the clinical setting.
